The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

External Hard drive wont install on Windows XP

Asked by debi7405 in Computer Hard Drives, Windows XP Operating System

I have a 4 year old compaq presario that has been problem free since I bought it. I am running XP Home, I have usb 2.0, and SP2.  Last weekend I bought a Western Digital My Book, 360 gig external hard drive. The instructions were so simple it only consisted of 3 pictures. There were no disks that came with it, should just plug it in.

Well it wont go. I plug it in, and the system detects it, asks if I want to find the drivers? (I guess thats what it is looking for)  and when I click yes it says it cant find it. I have tried pointing it to the C: drive, the windows folder, the I386 folder and one other I cant remember.  I can see it in device manager not just as an unknown device but with the "My Book" name, but with a question mark, and I cannot see it in disk management.

I hooked it up to my HP laptop which runs XP works great, hooked it up to my HP vista laptop, works great! My computer recognizes digital cameras, keyboards but not this New HD, my roommates older external HD or his flash drives. I spent 9 hours on Sunday searching for answers online. I did whatever updates Microsoft had available on Sunday as well during my desperation.

I do not have a copy of XP, it did not come with the system. I do have my recovery disks if I need to go that route, but without being able to use a flash drive the only way I can remove my 2700 songs and other files on my computer is to put them to CD.
