The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot join W2K8 domain, failing to update attributes in Active Directory

Asked by balazone in Active Directory, Domain Name Service (DNS), Windows Server 2008

Tags: , , ,

I have setup a Win2008 domain, only 1 DC. This machine also runs DHCP/DNS, Active Directory etc.. all in one box. This is for my companies office, 9 users.

I am trying to join a Vista Ultimate laptop to the domain. The laptop used to belong to our old domain but I took it off and now it is in a workgroup. When I try to join it to the domain I get the following error-

"The computer failed to join the domain "corp.<mydomain>.com" Please contact your domain administrator and indicate that the computer failed to update the dnsHostName and/or servicePrincipalName (SPN) attribute in its Active Directory computer account. Once the problem is resolved, you may join the computer to the "corp.<mydomain>.com" domain.

My active directory domain is called corp.xxxxx.com but I have not registered it with external DNS at our registrar. the full computer name is enterprise.corp.xxxxxx.com

The odd thing is that I have a virtual machine (XP) using Hyper-V running on the same machine and I was able to join the domain ok. I have two NIC's in the server 192.168.1.20 and 192.168.1.22 and both work but I use the .20 for DNS etc...

I can ping the DC from the domain and it has a static IP and static DNS pointing to the DC's DNS.

I am at a loss. This is my first domain I have ever setup and have been using a book/google/ee to help me set it up. I many not have DNS setup all the way or something, I just don't know.Start Free Trial
