Best format for Login Names / Email Addresses

A client has out grown their first initial/last name username convention and is having more and more problems with users overlapping. What is the recommended naming format used by companies these days. I've see the forementioned jbarron and other joseph.barron and other josephbarron, even just firstname and lastname. I've also seen the salted firstname.lastname### to void spam and other conventions.

What is the recommended format in today industry.
