I have SBC Yahoo DSL with a 2Wire brand DSL modem/router(that the ISP gave me) that also has wireless capabilities. I have a home workgroup (I've been thinking about setting up a domain before too long). I have 2 desktop PCs (1 XP Pro, 1 Vista Ultimate) as well as a laptop running XP Pro and an Xbox 360 that is also connected to the home network. All are connected via 802.11g wireless. Lately, I've been having nothing but trouble with file and print sharing between the clients. Accessing network shares that I've setup as well a shared printer that is attached locally to the XP Pro desktop is very touchy and works maybe 50% of the time. Everything will work fine for a week or so, then all of a sudden, I can't access anything. I work in IT professionally, and am pretty experienced in this kind of stuff. A couple of days ago when I couldn't access anything, I did troubleshooting for a couple of hours and finally connected to the 2Wire home router via http. I manually opened up the TCP/UDP ports for File and Print sharing on the 2Wire's firewall, and it started working. Now all of a sudden this morning, I can't access any shares again, even though nothing has changed in the config. At different times I've made different changes in the firewalls of the clients as well as the router to get things to work, then invariably within a few days, it acts up again.
Which finally leads me to my question. (Sorry about the length of this post!) I think that the 2Wire just isn't designed well for home networking. They probably assume that the average home user doesn't do this kind of stuff.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to use a more robust third party DSL Modem/Router with Wireless capabilities (preferably 802.11n - I'm dying to upgrade!) with SBC Yahoo. The firewall issues on the current router are just killing me, and there is no way to disable it. If not, is there any way to work around the 2Wire?
Thanks for your help!
