Unable to view the tty screens once X is started.

Ubuntu, Linux, Gutsy Gibbon

I have a number of Ubuntu installs - primarily Gutsy Gibbon.  On each and every install I am unable to view the original tty (CTRL+ALT+F1 for example) screens once X has been started.  The tty screen is accessible and I can blind-type my login, etc., but I just cannot view them: the screen simply goes blank.

How can I fix the situation?
