The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

 • The Grade of the Solution
 • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
 • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
 • The Number of Experts Contributing
 • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Microsoft, NTBackup, "MSDEWriter" has reported an error 0x800423f4

Hello all,

I have a client with a backup problem that I can't seem to solve.  For the last two weeks his nightly backups have failed with the following error code listed in the logs:
"MSDEWriter" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System
State. The backup cannot continue.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4
I have checked out the following MS KB articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;912414
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;828481

I have checked the following services:

MSSQL$SBSMONITORING
MSSQL$SHAREPOINT
SQL Server VSS Writer

All of them are configured to log on as local system account.

I have not installed the hotfix listed at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891957 because the server has SP2 installed.  I assume this hotfix would of been included in the new SP, wouldn't it?  This is a production server and the client doesn't have any backup servers, so I really don't want to install patches willy-nilly.  If this is what's required to fix it, then of course I'll do it, but I'd at least like some confirmation that this hotfix is still required even on SP2 installs before I go ahead and do it.

Can anyone help me out here?
