The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Microsoft, Windows, XP SP3

Hello-

I am experiencing a networking problem on a small network.

I have five PCs on a peer to peer network. All PCs are running WinXP Pro SP3. Everything was running fine until recently when two of the five PCs are not able to get to certain websites.

These two users will receive error "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when trying to access certain pages using IE7. If they try using Firefox, they are presented with the error "Address Not Found". If they use Google Chrome, they receive "This webpage is not available."

Webpages that they can NEVER access include mapquest.com, support.microsoft.com, my.yahoo.com, among others.

Webpages they can ALWAYS access include cnn.com, google.com, among others.

The other three users in the network have no problems accessing any webpages.

I have been focusing my efforts on one PC, thinking that the other PCs problem will be related.

I have tried flushing the DNS cache using "ipconfig /flushdns"

I have uninstalled all security software, all IE toolbars, and turned off Windows Firewall.

I have performed a brief scan with malwarebytes (no noteworthy results).

I have (obviously) tried multiple web browsers.

One thing I did notice that was out of place was that the command "ipconfig /all" returned a result saying "Node Type: Unknown". (This happened on both computers.) I corrected this on the one PC by adding the following keys to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
EnableProxy = 0
NodeType = 1
The fact that these two keys were missing seems significant, but now that ipconfig reports "Node Type: Broadcast" and I still receive the same results, I'm not sure how this fits.

I am at a loss about how to continue, but beyond that, I'm not sure what to even search for. All search strings I use seem to point me in completely the wrong direction (i.e. completely non-functioning DNS, ISP down, etc).

Suggestions will be appreciated. I am thinking of performing an OS reload on these two PCs, even though I think there must be a way to resolve this without that measure.

Thanks.
