Hijackthis.exe is always the first diagnostic tool I'd like to use for fighting malware/viruses. It's an excellent tool not just for browser hijacks but for diagnosing malware infections. Instead of trying so many scanners to see which one fixes the problem, hijackthis' log malware entries can pinpoint the culprit.
It is then a matter of choosing the right tool from the many tools which malware Experts have created to fix a specific malware problem. (Kudos to merijn and to all malware Experts)
Any leftovers can then be easily cleaned with your resident anti-malware scanner.
