The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

iTunes Sharing between PC and Mac

Asked by astwestmarty in Networking Hardware for Macintosh, iTunes Software, MP3 Download Software and Web Sites

Tags: itunes .itl share network PC Mac

Hello,

I've recently upgraded to iTunes 8 on both my Mac and PC. I'm trying to keep an External hard drive with ALL my music and LIBRARIES on it. The drive is formatted for the PC, connected via firewire to the PC and shared on my network. The Mac is also on the network, and can connect and edit the external HD files over the network--so I know there are no permissions problems.

I am able to open iTunes, and connect to the same itunes Database using both the PC and the Mac (but not simultaneously, and there's a small 'rebuilding' wait each time you open the Database from each machine). This I can deal with.

The problem is that whenever I try to play a song on the PC, I get the little exclamation point icon next to the song and iTunes asks me to locate the file. I don't want to lose all my ratings is the problem. I can certainly delete the songs and re-add them, but the ratings don't come through.

Is there a way to trick the computers by manually editing the spot to which iTunes thinks the actual .mp3 files are stored? By using a Hex editor or something?

Ideally, I want to use the same hard drive on different PCs and Macs, but allow my ratings and playlists to all be stored on the external as well.

Thanks! - Marty
