I posted this question a week or so ago:
I need help fixing the display on my iBook G4 14" 1.42 GHz. The iBook fell off the couch to the floor, a distance of about 2.5 feet. The computer starts up just fine, but the iBook display just shows grey/white. I get full video using an external monitor and the iBook keyboard and track pad work fine according to the external monitor.
I disassemble the laptop and removed the case around the monitor. The hinge is broken on the right side, but there is no other obvious damage.
I am willing to replace whatever parts need replacing, but would like some ideas as to what should be replaced first. This iBook has the combined Airport /Bluetooth card.

Sparkmaker responded with the following:
A grey/white screen indicates that there is no video signal getting to the screen, but the inverter s getting power to the ccfl backlights. I would suspect that either the cable has dislodged from the LCD controller board on the back of the LCD or that the lcd controller itself is damaged. You should reseat the connectors on both the motherboard and the LCD controller board behind the LCD screen.
Is the broken hinge near the LCD cable that goes to the LCD. Perhaps the hinge breaking has broken or cut a wire in the cable.

Hi GC and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
First take a look at this post and put pressure on the GPU as we discuss there:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1772152&tstart=0If the GPU checks out ok then the next place to look is the LVDS cable that runs around the left hinge. When the right hinge broke it could have put stress on that cable. A diagnostic test would involve moving that cable while the computer is on and observing the screen. You especially try pushing the strands of the cable together at the hinge point. You're looking for a bad wire so you'd take each individual wire and push it together esp at the hinge point. You'd have to take the iBook apart to do this.

I have take the iBook apart and replaced the hinge that was broken. I put pressure above and then below the GPU. (The top and bollom covers are off.) I also fiddled with the LVDS cable. Niether effort had any effect.
I unpluged and repluged the LVDS cable from the back of the monitor, while it was on. There was no change when I unpluged the cable, nor when I pluged it back in. The monitor continued to glow white/grey.
Any more suggestions? If I wanted to replace parts incrementally, from cheapeast to more expensive, what list would you suggest?
Thank you.
